The Impact I Want to Have

It’s my birthday, and I always use this milestone as a time to think deep about where I am in my life. How far I’ve come and what I still want to achieve.

And one thing I’ve found myself thinking about a lot lately is, what’s my contribution to the world?

I love supporting small businesses and nonprofits who do good work to amplify their message and make a bigger impact. It’s one way I see my businesses as a means to make the world a better place: I help my clients reach more people they can help.

But I want to tie that to something more direct that eases pain and suffering for so many. Throughout my adult life, I’ve volunteered at food banks and other organizations that help provide a basic need most of us probably take for granted: having enough food to eat.

It’s always resonated with me because if you’re hungry, it’s nearly impossible to think about bigger things or grow. You can’t learn as well, can’t help others as readily, maybe can’t work and certainly can’t start or grow a business.

So I’ve decided to start doing more. In honor of my birthday, I’ll start giving back a portion of revenue every month to two of my favorite organizations. Both Fertile GroundWorks and Feeding America do a great job of feeding people, in my own community and around the U.S.

And for every client who signs up in August — either for social media management or my consulting and training program — I’ll donate $100 to those nonprofits.
